Examination of Mobile Phone, UICC, SIM, USIM and MicroSIM Cards

We are  experienced in the examination of mobile phone handsets and SIM cards (technically know as UICC (Universal Integrated Circuit Cards) with SIM and/or USIM Applications). This experience has clearly shown that each mobile phone handset examination should be specifically tailored to the requirements of the case, rather than to focus on the speed of examination alone, which automated tools allow.

We have a wide variety of forensically sound examination and decoding tools developed in-house as well as by market leaders. Our reports are produced in an easy to read format with explanations of handset and SIM card infrastructure and operation included.

Information that we routinely recover from mobile phone handsets and SIM card exhibits is summarised below:

forensic examination of mobile phone

arrow
Dates, times and content from Short Message conversations (also known as text messages or SMS) can be stored on the mobile phone and SIM card.
arrow Phonebook Contacts stored on the mobile phone or SIM card can give clues as to the user and their acquaintances.
arrow Dialled, received and missed call history lists can be recovered to investigate call history.
arrow Digital files (pictures, videos, audio recordings, music MP3s, electronic documents etc) may be of significance.
arrow Email, Instant Messenger, BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) and Chat messages (i.e. MSN, Skype, AOL) can help provide an insight into the nature of contact between parties.
arrow Internet and WAP browsing history and bookmarks can be used to investigate a users online activity
arrow Calendar and Notes may further help determine relevant dates
arrow Bluetooth connectivity information can be used to investigate who, and possibly when, users have shared data
arrow Depending on the make and model of the mobile phone being examined it is possible that deleted information may be recovered

Examinations are performed manually as well as using a range of data extraction devices.  The techniques used depend upon the type of mobile telephone and the case objectives.

Examinations can be performed on mobile phone handsets running Apple iOS, Google Android, Symbian, Microsoft Windows, RIM BlackBerry OS, as well as many other proprietary operating systems (i.e. Nokia, Motorola, Samsung etc). Data capture is also possible from many service provider independent mobile phone Applications (Apps), which are software packages that can be installed on modern smart-phones. Information recovered from an App may include the recovery of valuable information exchanged via 'Facebook', 'MSN', other Instant Messenger service, or 'Twitter', or documents created, stored or edited on that device.

Examinations can be scaled to your requirements, i.e. speed of turnaround, volume of exhibits and the level of information required. In all cases, since the examinations are performed by accredited experts in this field, and in interpreting and examining telephone evidence in general, this means that we can provide advise to supplement or further interpret the significance of the examination reports.

Collection and delivery services are also available to ensure the continuity of exhibits.
